Son of a fabric merchant, Tissot left for Paris in 1856 in order to study at the École des Beaux-Arts under Louis Lamothe (1822-1869) and <a href=" https://findartvalue.com/artist/hippolyte-jean-flandrin">Hippolyte Flandrin</a> (1809-1864).
