Sotheby’s spring auction of 19th Century European Art brings together extraordinary paintings that showcase the richness of this collecting category. The sale is highlighted by important paintings with institutional provenance, including masterpieces from the Berkshire Museum by William Bouguereau and Alberto Pasini, and Emile Renouf’s Helping Hand and Frederick Arthur Bridgman’s Procession of the Bull Apis, which formerly hung side by side at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C. Important discoveries include Bouguereau’s 1854 suite Quatre saisons, Albert Edelfelt’s Au jardin, and two paintings by Eugen von Blaas, and an exceptional selection of works by the members of the Barbizon school. British artists are well represented by evocative canvases by Laura Knight, Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema, John William Godward and John Atkinson Grimshaw.
