Sotheby’s Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale features an array of paintings, works on paper and sculpture by leading artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Leading the sale is Amedeo Modigliani’s Nu couché, a masterpiece from his 1917 production and the largest canvas the artist ever painted. Claude Monet’sMatinée sur la Seine sublimely captures Monet’s mastery of atmospheric effects in its depiction of dawn breaking over the water by his beloved home at Giverny, while a superlative 1932 canvas of Pablo Picasso’s sleeping muse, Marie-Thérèse Walter, Le Repos, dazzles in a symphonically bright palette of verdant greens, crimsons, whites and purples. Other highlights include a loving family scene from Picasso’s Rose period as well as prime examples from across his oeuvre (starting with a Paris-based oil of 1900 and ending in his final years in 1972), a strong selection of modern sculpture and classic compositions of Impressionist painters along with an array of Cubist, Dada and Purist works.
